Geographical center of Europe
Several places claim the prized title of the geographical center of Europe. The point geolocation depends on many factors: the calculation method, the definition of Europe's borders, as well as the inclusion or exclusion of remote islands. According to various calculations, the center can be located in Lithuania, the Baltic Sea, Estonia, Hungary, Poland, or Slovakia.
Ukraine also has its geographical center of Europe. It is located in the village of Dilove, in Zakarpattia. Moreover, this point was determined a long time ago, calculated by Austrian geographers at the end of the 19th century. Back then, a two-meter stone sign was erected with the coordinates of 47°57′ north latitude 24°11′ east longitude and the inscription in Latin: “This is a permanent, exact, and eternal place, determined by a special apparatus made in Austria-Hungary, under the European system of latitude and longitude. 1887.”
90 years later, a new sign with an inscription about the geographical center of Europe was erected. Travelers touch it and move on as there are a lot of places of interest nearby, such as the Carpathian Mountains, the rapid Tisza River, and the Yalinsky Waterfall.
The sign itself and the concept of the geographical center are nothing more than symbols. A symbol that Ukraine is an inseparable part of Europe: geographically, culturally, and historically.
