Krychevsky Museum in Poltava
Mammoths, embroideries, Egyptian relics, and a ball-shaped iron. What could all of these things have in common? Of course, the Vasyl Krychevsky Local History Museum in Poltava, one of the oldest in Ukraine, founded in 1891!
Vasyl Krychevsky was a prominent Ukrainian artist, and architect of the building currently occupied by the institution. It was built from 1903 to 1908 as a premises for the provincial administration, and only a few rooms were initially allocated to the museum. But in such a building, just a few rooms have the same value as entire floors anywhere else, as this is the first example of Ukrainian architectural modernism in the Poltava region!
Both floors are brick, and the lower level is decorated with pink granite. There are fancy towers on the roof, and the facade and interiors are decorated with ceramics and majolica made by students in local workshops. The exterior is decorated with coats of arms of the cities of the Poltava oblast, trees of life, and other ornaments characteristic of Ukrainian folk painting.
“There is not a single place on the inner wall or the ceiling without a wonderful Ukrainian ornament either painted or carved. Every little thing in that building, even a small bowl, or the largest exhibits, has a distinct sign of Ukrainian art,” wrote an author of the Native Land magazine after the facility was opened.
However, the Nazis burned the museum down during WWII. After the war, it was restored to be as similar as possible to the original building. Today, the Poltava Local History Museum is one of the largest in Ukraine with a collection of over 300,000 artifacts. It includes a mammoth, embroideries, Egyptian relics, and even a ball-shaped iron, which are all worth seeing.
