Mykolaiv Administration Building
Some time ago, the Mykolaiv Zoo was located here. Russia has done something truly barbaric with the building that was erected in its place.
The Mykolaiv Regional State Administration building was built in 1981. A few years prior, the zoo, which no longer fit at the location, had been moved to another site. The new state building was planned to be spectacular: a 16-story construction in the shape of an open book. According to a semi-legendary story, the Soviet authorities eventually changed their minds, the logic being that the administration building would allegedly be too big and beautiful, and dominate the regional party committee facility, which was deemed unacceptable. So the project was simplified: the height was reduced to nine floors, the book allusion was rejected, but a colonnade was added. However, this was not approved either – the colonnade had to be removed, and the building turned out to be quite utilitarian with no decorations.
Still, the administration's location in the large square was quite impressive. But on March 29, 2022, a Russian missile hit the building. 37 people died under the rubble, and more than 30 were injured.
This atrocity committed by the Russian Federation destroyed the central section from the first to the ninth floor. Sorting through the debris and searching for people lasted almost a week. The administration resumed its operations, although not in this building. In 2022, Mykolaiv was awarded the title of the “Hero City of Ukraine” and still today continues to resist Russian aggression.
